Chad è nato a Buffalo, New York, e già da subito si è dilettato ad esibirsi di fronte alla sua famiglia e così, dopo un infortunio procuratosi giocando a football, intraprende la carriera di modello.
Murray riceve una borsa di studio da un'agenzia di modelli di Buffalo due anni dopo l'inizio della carriera e ad Orlando incontra un agente che lo porta a Los Angeles. In questa città inizia la vera e propria carriera di Murray che diventa modello per marche come Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger e Sketchers.
Appare per la prima volta in tv come ospite al “Diagnosis Murder” (1993). Partecipa a molte trasmissioni tra cui Gilmore Girls nel ruolo di Tristan DuGrey e Dawson's Creek nel ruolo di Charlie. Ha partecipato a film comeFreaky Friday, con Jamie Lee Curtis e Lindsey Lohan; Cinderella Story, con Hilary Duff.
Ultimamente ha girato il film “House of Wax” con Paris Hilton, Elisha Cuthbert, Jared Padalecki.
