James è nato ad Helmet, California ed è in questo posto che inizierà la sua carriera di attore in seguito alle spinte della madre ad entrare in questo mondo. Lafferty inizia a lavorare all'età di 7 anni insieme al fratello e 3 anni dopo ottiene una piccola parte con delle battute. Successivamente a ciò iniziarono alcune richieste per pubblicità.
Il vero e proprio ruolo di Lafferty fu in "Emeril", una sitcom dove interpretava il figlio di Emeril. Ha partecipato anche a “A Season on the Brink”.
