Gerald McRaney nasce il 19 Agosto del 1947 a Collins, nel Mississippi.
Raggiunge il successo tra il 1981 e il 1989 quando ha interpretato l'investigatore Rick Simon in Simon&Simon, ma non prima di aver interpretato ruoli in L’incredibile Hulk e Agenzia Rockford.
E' da sempre uno degli attori più amati dal pubblico americano e ha partecipato a molte serie televisive. Tuttora, da 18 anni, svolge un ruolo nella serie tv della CBS.
Molte volte interpreta ruoli ironici come John McGillis in "Agli Ordini Papà", in cui si ritrova alle prese con tre piccole pesti.
Di recente ha partecipato a West Wing e Deadwood, e da non dimenticare il suo ruolo di padre nella "Storia Infinita" del 1984.
