Dominic Purcell è nato il 17 Febbraio 1970 a Londra, Inghilterra. Trascorre la sua infanzia in Australia ove frequenta l"Australian Theatre for Young People" ed successivamente frequenta la "Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts" diretta dagli attori Hugh Jackman e Francis O’Connor.
Dopo essersi diplomato, riceve una parte in "Raw FM", una serie televisiva australiana, e in "Mission: Impossible". Partecipa anche a "Equilibrium", "The Visitors", "First Daughter" e "Moby Dick".
Partecipa anche ad alcune opere teatrali come in "Antony and Cleopatra", "Angels in America", "The Pillars of Society" e "Romeo and Juliet".
Ultimamente ha preso parte anche in "North Shore", a "Blade: Trinity" e "3-Way".
Il suo ruolo più importante però e senz'altro quello di John Doe nella serie televisiva omonima.
