Hugh Laurie è l'ultimo di quattro figli nati da Patricia e "Ran" Laurie. Il padre è uno dei noti canottieri della Cambridge University, il quale nel 1948 riuscì a conquistare la medaglia d'oro nelle Olimpiadi di Londra.
Dopo aver completato gli studi alla Dragon School, Hugh decide di iscriversi al college di Eton per seguire le orme del padre diventando anche capitano della squadra di canottaggio.
Nel 1978 Hugh si iscrive alla Cambridge University per studi di archeologia, ma in seguito ad un incidente è costretto a lasciare canottaggio decidendo così di iscriversi ad alcuni corsi di recitazione a teatro.
Insieme a Stephen Fry, Hugh scrive un pezzo da presentare al concorso di Edimburgo, dove vince il primo premio ricevendo un grande successo.
In seguito alla vittoria del conocorso Hugh riceve alcune proposte da parte della televisione dove entra nel cast della serie "La serpe nera" e "Gli amici di Peter".
Successivamente compare in altri molti film tra cui, per i più giovani, "La carica dei 101" e "Stuart Little, un topolino in gamba".
