 Marcus Alan Dale nasce il 6 Maggio del 1947 a Dunedin, in Nuova Zelanda.
La sua notorietà è dovuta al gran numero di telefilm in cui ha partecipato: Lost, Ugly Betty, The X Files, E.R., N.C.I.S., Jad e The OC sono infatti tutti nella sua lista del curriculum.
Alan si è sposato per la prima volta nel 1968 all'età di 21 anni dal cui matrimonio sono nati due figli. In seguito al divorzio si è sposato nuovamente nel 1990 con Tracey Pearson da cui sono nati altri due figli.
