Michael Emerson nasce 7 Settembre del 1954 a Cedar Rapids, in Iowa, USA.
Fin da piccolo ha avuto un particolare interesse per la recitazione, soprattuto verso quella teatrale.
In seguito alla laurea ottenuta alla Drake University nel 1976, si sposta a New York, senza però riuscire ad ottenre nessun lavoro come attore.
Decide così di tentare in Florida ottenendo però solamente alcune produzioni della zona.
Successivamente ha ottenuto anche alcune proposte per ruoli in telefilm "Law and Order" e "X Files".
